Habarana ¬-Sigiriya – Habarana
Breakfast at the hotel. Proceed to Sigiriya. Excursion to Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Imagine walking through the mouth of a Lion lying a top a 200-meter-tall rock to enter a king’s fortress like no other. That’s what it would have felt like for King Kashyapa and his fellow followers who entered the fortress of Sigiriya. With a 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape it was the perfect location for a fortress of a king anticipating an invasion. The king surrounded his fortress with a boulder and water garden that host an ancient irrigation system the continues to baffle the modern engineer, which to date sprouts water on a rainy day. The kings bathing pool found on top of the rock holds water year throughout and it is still an unsolved mystery as to how water is taken to the top of the rock without visible piping. The frescos painted on to the rock are ones not to miss as they show off the mastery of the artists of old. The rocky outcrop and the surrounding areas were in use by humans much before the time of King Kashyapa. Aligala (Elephant rock) situated close to the main fortress is one such location where early man occupied the area over 5000 years ago. Termed as the 8th wonder of the world this complex used as fortress and as a monastery is true marvel of architecture, design and art and is a UNESCO world heritage site and is something that should not be missed by the anyone traveling to the island. Return to the hotel. In the evening engage in a safari to the national park of Minneriya. Upon your return to the hotel or while en route to the hotel stop by a local night food stall to take a look at the making of “Kottu roti” and Hoppers (popular Sri Lankan dinner options) Return to the hotel for dinner. Dinner and overnight at Cinnamon Lodge, or similar.

The complex, situated in the heart of the sacred city of Kandy is the icon of its heritage, today the home of the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha that determined the capital of the island for centuries, thus a political symbol of power. The Temple of the Tooth is venerated by millions of devotees across the country and the world. The much-anticipated grand Kandy Esala Perahera Festival pays tribute to the tooth relic in style every July or August decorated with twinkling lights, drumbeats so catchy amid dancers and elephants in lavish colours showered by holy blessings.
