Into the Wild: The Tayronas’ Trail Begins

Morning – Departure from Santa Marta 

Your journey begins at Expotur’s office, where excitement builds as you climb into a 4WD vehicle. The adventure starts with a 2.5-hour drive through lush, rolling hills and vibrant jungle landscapes to the remote gateway of El Mamey.

Energizing Lunch at El Mamey

Upon arrival, savor a hearty local lunch—fuel for the trek ahead. Soak in the mountain views and soak up the anticipation of discovering the ancient lands of the Tayrona people.

Trek to Camp 1 (approx. 4 hours, 6.8 km)

Strap on your boots and set off on foot, ascending mostly uphill through dense jungle alive with tropical sounds. The trail meanders through patches of sunlight and shade; keep watch for exotic birds and butterflies flitting among the greenery.

River Refresh & Arrival at Camp 1

As evening nears, reach the first jungle camp. If the weather’s kind, cool off with a well-earned splash in the crystal-clear river nearby—a true reward after the trek.

Hammocks & Jungle Dinner

Unwind in rustic hammocks as dusk settles. A tasty dinner awaits you under the stars, rounding off day one with the soothing music of the rainforest all around.

Early Morning – Sunrise, Breakfast, and Preparation

Trek Along the Buritaca River

Embark on your trek as you follow the winding Buritaca River, the water glimmering beside you. Listen to the sounds of rushing water and tropical birds as you approach the indigenous Kogui village of Mutanshi.

Cultural Glimpse in Mutanshi Village

Pass through the vibrant Kogui community of Mutanshi, where clusters of thatched houses blend seamlessly with the jungle. Observe the daily rhythms of the inhabitants, cultivating a deep respect for the ancestral culture that thrives in this remote corner of Colombia.

Jungle Trekking & Sierra Biodiversity (Total distance: ~14.7 km, 7 hours, mostly uphill)

Continue your trek through lush forest, marvelling at towering trees, bursts of colorful flowers, and perhaps spotting monkeys or toucans along the trail. Challenging uphill sections give way to rewarding valley views, as every breath is filled with jungle magic.

Arrival at Camp 3 & Well-Deserved Feast

Arrive at Camp 3, an inviting site nestled in the wilderness and equipped with hammocks or beds. Relax and share stories about the day’s wonder while enjoying a delicious dinner, serenaded by the jungle’s nocturnal symphony. Drift to sleep after an unforgettable day of exploration.

Begin your ascent up 1,200 mystical stone steps, a path carved centuries ago by the Tayrona civilization. Each step brings you deeper into the heart of legend, surrounded by misty jungle and echoing with the whispers of history.

Exploring the Lost City (Ciudad Perdida)

Arrive at the awe-inspiring Lost City, hidden amid the emerald mountain. Guided by local experts, roam age-old terraces, stone circles, and ceremonial sites brimming with relics and ancestral tales. Time to Wander and Wonder

Trek Back and Lunch at Camp 3 (Trek: total 6 km, 7 hours, mixed terrain)

Trek to Camp 2 & Jungle Night

Continue your hike downhill and uphill to Camp 2. As twilight drapes the forest, enjoy a well-earned dinner and recount your day of discovery before resting under the stars.

Farewell to the Sierra: Journey Home

Early Morning – Sunrise and Fuel for the Journey

Awaken early at Camp 2 for a nourishing breakfast as sunlight pours over the jungle canopy, preparing you for your final day of adventure.

Trek Back Through Enchanted Wilderness (Trek: 7-8 hours, 16.5 km, some uphills, mostly downhill)

Set out on the return trail, retracing your steps through the breathtaking Sierra Nevada. The air is fresh and the scenery ever-changing as you descend deeper into the thick emerald forest.

River & Waterfall Refreshment Breaks

Pause along the way to cool off in sparkling jungle rivers and at hidden waterfalls (weather permitting)—each one a serene oasis to reflect, soak your tired feet, and enjoy the natural wonders all around you.

Lunch at El Mamey & Last Memories

Emerge from the jungle into El Mamey, where a hearty lunch awaits. Share stories and laughs with your group as you celebrate your triumph over the Lost City trek.
