Hiking Off the Beaten Path
Montserrat is one of Barcelona adventurers' favorite outdoor sports. Its location just outside of the city makes it perfect for a nice hiking trip! A short 45-min. drive on a minivan will take you to Montserrat. Your excursion will take off with a visit to the Benedictine Abbey as you learn its amazing history. Montserrat literally means sawed mountain in Catalan because of its particular multi-peaked formation. The Abbey sitting on its top is well known as the site of Santa Maria de Montserrat which hosts the famous Black Madonna: La Moreneta. Then, you'll start hiking from the monastery following a beautiful path that goes around the peaks of the mountain. As you pass by, the many natural viewpoints will offer awesome views of the abbey and the forests around. When you've reached the highest point of the route, breathtaking 360° panoramic views of the multi-peaked rocky range will awe you! If you are fortunate enough to have clear skies, you might be able to see the Pyrenees. You'll have enough time to admire the great landscapes and maybe snap a picture or two. After admiring those great landscapes, we will start descending through a shady path between forests of the mountain that will bring us back to the Abbey where we will have some free time for visiting the farmers market, relaxing, or hear the famous Escolania de Montserrat boys choir sing (on working days from Monday to Friday, subject to Basilica capacity).
