Victoria Memorial (Closed on Mondays & National Holidays), built of white marble and surrounded by lush gardens, the Victoria Memorial is probably the most beautiful monumental legacy of British India. It was built by Lord Curzon in the early 20th century in memory of the late Queen of England. It took twenty years to be built and was formally inaugurated by the Prince of Wales in 1921. Inside the monument, there are portraits and statues of the participants in the history of British India. St. Paul's Cathedral Church, constructed in the mid-19th century, the St. Paul's Cathedral is spectacular and serene. Howrah Bridge (drive pass), this engineering marvel of the mid-20th century took six years to be constructed. The Howrah Bridge crosses the vast Hooghly River with no piers at all within the river. Writers Building (drive pass), built in the year 1780, Writers' Building is a major landmark in Calcutta famous for its Corinthian façade. Originally built as a residence for the British East India Company's clerical and administrative staff, it today houses the main state secretariat. The tall columns, the corridors flanked by ornate arches, and the pavilions that grace the center exhibit the best of colonial architecture.
