Galle (UNESCO World Heritage Site): The Dutch built the fortified town of Galle in the 16th century. It sits approximately 130 km (81 miles) south of Colombo and is a town worth visiting. Yala National Park: Yala combines a strict nature reserve with a national park. Divided into 5 blocks, the park has a protected area of nearly 130,000 hectares of land consisting of light forests, scrubs, grasslands, tanks and lagoons. Two blocks are currently opened to the public. Situated in Sri Lanka’s south-east hugging the panoramic Indian Ocean, Yala was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and was designated a national park in 1938. Ironically, the park was initially used as a hunting ground for the elite under British rule. Yala is home to 44 varieties of mammal and 215 bird species. Among its more famous residents are the world’s biggest concentration of leopards, majestic elephants, sloth bears, sambars, jackals, spotted dear, peacocks, and crocodiles. YALA - NUWARA ELIYA BY DRIVE
Nuwara Eliya: The ‘Little England’ of Sri Lanka, is set against beautiful backdrops of Mountains, Valleys, Waterfalls and Tea Plantations. Samuel Baker, the discoverer of Lake Albert and the explorer of the Nile in 1846, founded the city. It is supposed to be one of the coldest places on the island, but is really just like an England spring day although the temperature does drop at night. Many of the buildings retain features from the colonial period such as the Queen’s Cottage, Grand Hotel, Hill club, Post office etc... Town attractions include the golf course, trout streams, Victoria park, and boating on Lake Gregory. EXCURSION TO HORTON PLAINS
Horton Plains: 20 miles (32 km) from Nuwara Eliya via Ambewela and Pattipola, is located between the peaks of Kirigalpotta 2395 meters and Thotupalakanda 2360 meters, the 2nd and 3rd highest mountains of Sri Lanka respectively. Horton Plains is only 3160 hectares in its extent. Known to Sri Lankans as Mahaeliya, it became Horton Plains after Sir Robert Horton, British Governor from 1831- 1837. Horton Plains became a Nature Reserve in 1969 and upgraded as a National Park in 1988 due to its unique watershed and bio-diversity values of the “Cloud Forest Reserve”. Its flora has high level of endemism. The hills are covered with diverse wet low evergreen forest with even large trees grown flattened to the ground on the higher windswept slopes. NUWARA ELIYA - KANDY BY DRIVE
After Breakfast drive to Kandy the cultural place of Sri Lanka. Kandy (UNESCO World Heritage Site): Kandy, a mountain city in Sri Lanka, was home to the Sinhalese kings from 1592 to 1815. It is also the site of Sri Dalada Maligawa, also called the Temple of the Tooth, as a special container holds a tooth of the Buddha. Over the years, the relic came to be very important politically; the belief was that the holder of the sacred tooth was the one who would have power over the Buddhist population. The Sacred City of Kandy was appointed the status of World Heritage Site in 1988, mainly due to the Temple of the Tooth.
