We will visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage: This is an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants, located at Pinnawala village, 13 km northeast of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa province in Sri Lanka. Pinnawala has the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. The orphanage was founded to care and protect the many orphaned unweaned wild elephants found wandering in and near the forests of Sri Lanka. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation Dambulla (UNESCO World Heritage Site): The Golden Dambulla Cave Temple has been a pilgrimage destination for the past 22 centuries. It’s also the largest and best- preserved cave temple on the island (there are others). Today we will make excursion to Sigiriya & Polonnaruwa Sigiriya (UNESCO World Heritage Site): The rocky outcrop of Sigiriya holds the ancient remains of King Kassapa’s palace from the 5th century AD. The top is reachable by stairs built on the side of the mountain and features the Lion Rock and the remains of the palace and fortress. Visitors will see the magnificence of the place when they reach the top, complete with a 360-degree view of the jungle below. The water reservoirs that collect rainwater are still there and in good condition. Sigiriya was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Polonnaruwa (UNESCO World Heritage Site): After the destruction of Anuradhapura in the 1st century, Polonnaruwa became the second capital of Sri Lanka. The remains include Bhramanic constructions from the Cholas civilization as well as the garden city that was constructed on the site in the 12th century. Nuwara Eliya: The ‘Little England’ of Sri Lanka, is set against beautiful backdrops of Mountains, Valleys, Waterfalls and Tea Plantations. Yala: Yala combines a strict nature reserve with a national park. Divided into 5 blocks, the park has a protected area of nearly 130,000 hectares of land consisting of light forests, scrubs, grasslands, tanks and lagoons.
